Common Problems

Unable to Complete Registration Form - Blank Page
This symptom is often experienced by users who are running out of memory. For best results, restart your computer. Before launching your Internet browser, close all running applications, then launch your browser and try again to register for the download. It's best not to run other applications while registering for the download or while running Stagecast Creator itself.

Unable to Complete Registration - You Need to Enable Cookies on your Browser
The download process is a 2-page process that places a cookie on your local computer. If cookies are disabled, you will see an error message that states "You Need to Enable Cookies on your Browser." Most browsers offer the capability to enable or disable cookies, although not all system configurations will have the exact options listed here.

  • Netscape 4 or 6 (Windows): Choose the Preferences command in the Edit menu. In the Advanced section, there is a check box next to "Disable Cookies". If a check mark appears in the check box, click on it to uncheck it.
  • Netscape 4 or 6 (Mac): Choose the Preferences command in the Edit menu. In the Advanced section, click the appropriate radio button within the Cookies section. Note: To play certain Stagecast simulations that you find on the Web inside a Macintosh web browser, you will need either Netscape 6 or later or Internet Explorer 4 or later.
  • Internet Explorer 4 (Windows): Choose the Internet Options command in the View menu. Then click the appropriate radio button within the Security section of the Advanced tab.
  • Internet Explorer 5 (Windows): Choose the Internet Options link from the Tools menu. Click on Security Tab and choose the Internet Zone.  Click on the Custom Level button and select the Enable radio button from within the Cookies section.
  • Internet Explorer 4 (Mac): Choose the Preferences link from the Edit menu. Click on the word Cookies within the Receiving Files section. Then select the appropriate Cookie Settings from the pull-down menu.
  • AOL 4 (Windows): AOL 4.0 uses settings you set via your Windows Control Panel.  Click on the My Computer icon on your Windows desktop. Then click on the Control Panel and select the Internet icon. There are radio buttons that enable you to set Cookies within the Security section of the Advanced tab. Then click the appropriate radio button: "Always accept cookies" or "Prompt before accepting cookies."
  • AOL 4 (Mac): Under the My AOL menu item, select the Preferences option.  Click on the WWW icon to edit your Web Preferences.  Click on the Advanced Settings button.  Click on the word Cookies within the Receiving Files section. Then select the appropriate Cookie Settings from the pull-down menu.

Once you've made certain that cookies are accepted/enabled, try again to register for the download.

Incomplete Download
The download files are large. If you stop the download or your network connection is disrupted before the file is finished being downloaded, you will need to download the software again. Registered Users can download the software without having to re-register.

Registered users also may try to download the software via FTP or a download manager. GetRight, a download manager for Windows 95/98/NT, and Fetch, an FTP client for the Mac, are two shareware programs which have the ability to resume interrupted downloads. Windows Netscape users may want to upgrade to Netscape 4.7, which includes a built-in download manager.

Internet Explorer 3.0 users may wish to upgrade, since we observe fewer problems with later versions of that browser.

Unable to Find Downloaded Software
The Stagecast Creator download file is named SetupCreatorEval.exe (Windows version) or InstallCreatorEval.dmg (Mac version).  Users should save these files on their local computers with the same names. Windows users are presented a dialog box prompting them to specify the location and filename for a file that's about to be downloaded. Mac users do not see a dialog box - the software is downloaded to a pre-specified location, which by default is the desktop folder.

Unable to Install Downloaded Software
Once you have the file downloaded, you need to install it. The file formats are automatically recognized by most systems, and double clicking the file is all that is needed to begin the installation process. If your Windows file was downloaded with a filename that did not end in .exe, you can rename it, after it has been downloaded, to a filename which ends in .exe then proceed successfully. If your Mac file still has the suffix ".bin" or ".zip", it first must be decoded before the software can be installed. Double-click on the file to decode it, or you may have to open the file with StuffIt Expander. Then double-click the resulting InstallCreator file to launch the installer.

Unable to Launch Program Once Installed
When installation completes successfully, an icon is placed on the desktop of your system. The icon is entitled "Stagecast Creator" and is a shortcut to the executable application file. Double-click on the icon to launch Stagecast Creator.

On a Windows PC, you also may launch the program from the Windows Start Menu. From the Start Menu, select Programs and then Stagecast.  If you choose to launch the Player rather than Creator, you may need to first locate the Player program file.  It is named Player.exe and is located in the Program Files\Stagecast\Creator folder.

Unable to Download Sim or World - Get ASCII Page
If the sim or world is downloaded within your web browser window as a page of ASCII characters, instead of being saved as a file, you may either:

  1. Save the ASCII page to disk as follows:
    • Within the browser "File" menu, select the "Save As" option. Save as type "All Files."
    • On a Mac, the world file automatically will be saved to your desktop. On a Windows computer, we suggest saving within your Stagecast folder.
  2. Drag the download link to your desktop rather than clicking on it.

After you have closed the browser, launch Creator. Click on the button that says "open a sim" to open the sim you just downloaded.
